Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has become the club’s most decorated Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year winner after claiming the award for a record fifth time.
The Portuguese midfielder moved ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and former goalkeeper David de Gea, who both won the award four times during their Manchester United careers.
Fernandes earned the honour following another influential season at Old Trafford, helping United secure qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League under manager Michael Carrick.
The 31-year-old has registered eight Premier League goals and 19 assists this season, remaining the creative force behind United’s resurgence.
His assist tally also leaves him on the verge of Premier League history.
Fernandes requires one more assist to equal the single-season Premier League record of 20 jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
The midfielder has also created 124 chances this campaign, the fourth-highest total recorded in a Premier League season.
Since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, Fernandes has consistently been among Manchester United’s standout performers.
He won the Sir Matt Busby award for the first time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before recording a personal-best 28-goal season the following year.
After Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford claimed the award in later seasons, Fernandes returned to the top in 2024 following United’s FA Cup success at Wembley.
His latest triumph also makes him only the second player after De Gea to complete a hat-trick of consecutive Player of the Year awards at the club.
