Former football stars from Lagos and Imo states will honour late Nigerian football legend Henry Onyemanze Nwosu with a commemorative football match as part of his burial rites next month.
Details released by the family of the late ex-international alongside the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) showed that the tribute game will hold on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Imo State.
The match, scheduled to kick off by 3pm, will feature Lagos Legends against Imo Legends in honour of the former Super Eagles midfielder.
The football tribute forms part of a week-long burial programme announced for the late Nwosu, who died on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the age of 62.
In the obituary announcement, the family said: “With profound gratitude to God for a life well spent, yet with heavy hearts, the family of Late Chief Ogazi-Nwosu of Umukwoma Umuorie-Naze, Imo State, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), ex-internationals, friends, and well-wishers announce the transition to glory of Henry Onyemanze Nwosu (MON).”
According to the funeral programme, activities will begin with a night of tributes on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Saint Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos, from 4pm to 7pm.
A service of songs is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Umukwoma Umuorie-Naze in Imo State between 4pm and 6pm.
Funeral activities will continue on Saturday, June 6, 2026, with a lying-in-state at Dan Anyiam Stadium before a funeral mass at his country home in Umukwoma, Naze, Imo State.
The family stated that interment would follow immediately after the funeral mass.
A thanksgiving service will conclude the burial rites on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Naze, Imo State.
The family added: “All funeral arrangements are strictly as outlined.”
Nwosu remains one of Nigeria’s most respected football figures and is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings and extended family members.
