A meet-up that began on a dating app has taken a violent turn in Gwarinpa, Abuja in Nigeria after a man reportedly refused to comply with the expectations of his visitor, leading to a chaotic confrontation inside his home.
According to the host, he met a man on Grindr who appeared to be a male model. The visitor later showed up at his residence, expecting a sexual encounter.
“He came to my house to have sɛx, I refused, asked him to leave. That’s when the problem started,” the host recounted in an emotional statement.
The situation quickly escalated when the visitor refused to leave and insisted on being paid. Frustration and aggression set in, with the man breaking bottles, scattering household items, and injuring himself in the process.
Witnesses who later saw video footage of the scene described it as chaotic and alarming.
The host explained that the visitor’s refusal to leave raised suspicions that he was involved in “kito,” a term used locally for extortion schemes targeting LGBTQ+ individuals.
This prompted both fear and concern for personal safety, as the encounter could have easily turned deadly.
The incident has sparked intense discussions on social media about the dangers of meeting strangers from dating apps.
Many users cautioned others to exercise extreme vigilance when arranging in-person meet-ups, highlighting how quickly seemingly casual encounters can spiral into violence and extortion.
While no arrests have been confirmed, the case has drawn attention to the broader risks faced by users of online dating platforms in Nigeria, including catfishing, harassment, and extortion.
