According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has disclosed the reasons former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, failed to join the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.………
Baba-Ahmed made the disclosure while speaking during a Hausa political programme aired on DITV Kaduna on Tuesday.
He explained that discussions held between the PRP and the two politicians eventually broke down following disagreements over conditions linked to their proposed entry into the party.
According to him, both Obi and Kwankwaso had initiated talks with the PRP in search of possible political collaboration ahead of the next election cycle.
He stated that the party engaged in discussions with both camps, but the negotiations could not progress after both sides failed to agree on key issues raised during the meetings.
Baba-Ahmed stated that one of the major sticking points during the discussions was the demand that they should be assured of securing the party’s presidential ticket without being subjected to internal party competition or primary processes.
He said the request was not acceptable to the leadership of the party.
He explained that the PRP maintained its position that every aspirant seeking any elective office on the platform of the party must first become a registered member and follow the constitutional guidelines laid down by the organisation before contesting for any position.
The PRP chairman further disclosed that the political camps of the two politicians also requested guarantees for several strategic positions within the party structure.
According to him, the requests were based on the strength of their political support and influence across different parts of the country.
