National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, has clarified that any ongoing discussions among presidential aspirants within the party are personal engagements and not official negotiations conducted by the ADC as an institution.
Abdullahi made the clarification during an interview on AIT News on Thursday, May 14, 2026, while responding to questions surrounding political consultations and the growing interest in the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the interview, Abdullahi stated that the ADC remains open and competitive across all regions of the country, despite suggestions that political activities surrounding the party appear more concentrated in Northern Nigeria. “Like you’ve rightly mentioned, ADC is competitive everywhere,” he said.
He acknowledged that recent developments within the party, particularly the purchase of nomination forms by aspirants and political consultations, had generated increased attention in parts of the North. “But from what you have seen in the last one week or so, that people have been coming over to obtain nomination forms, the intensity appears to be concentrated more in the north than in the south,” Abdullahi stated.
Despite this perception, he maintained that the party continues to attract aspirants from different parts of the country. “I mean, we have candidates, we have aspirants everywhere,” he added.
The ADC spokesman also addressed reports suggesting that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may be engaged in negotiations with other aspirants concerning the party’s presidential ticket.
According to Abdullahi, such discussions should not be interpreted as official party positions or institutional decisions by the ADC. “I can tell you, if Atiku Abubakar, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is talking to any other aspirant, it is not ADC talking. Okay, it is not ADC talking. It is one aspirant negotiating with another aspirant,” Abdullahi added.
He noted that political consultations among aspirants are normal within the democratic process and should not be mistaken for formal party arrangements. “I mean, that is fine. Everybody is talking to one another,” he stated.
