The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has directed that an apology be extended to Professor Eyo Ekpe and members of the Nigerian Medical Association following the May 12, 2026 incident involving personnel of the Commission and medical staff of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

The directive followed the receipt and review of a preliminary report on the incident, which reportedly sparked concerns among medical personnel and members of the public.

According to the Commission, Olukoyede expressed regret over the discomfort and disruption caused by the incident, stressing that the wellbeing of Nigerians remains central to the EFCC’s mandate.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s earlier decision to launch a full investigation into the matter and assured that any officer found to have acted outside established professional standards would face internal disciplinary measures.

The EFCC Chairman also stated that the Commission remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to address concerns arising from the incident and prevent a recurrence in the future.

Despite the controversy, Olukoyede maintained that the episode would not deter the anti-graft agency from carrying out its responsibilities across the country.

He further appealed to members of the NMA and other professional groups to continue supporting the EFCC in its efforts to combat economic and financial crimes and strengthen the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
