Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume has called for calm and unity within the All Progressives Congress in Benue following complaints over the conduct of the party’s recent primaries.
Akume made the remarks while speaking with journalists at the airport in Makurdi, where he addressed concerns raised by some party members regarding the governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly primary elections.
Several APC members had reportedly alleged irregularities during the exercises, with some expressing dissatisfaction over the outcome of the primaries.
According to Akume, disagreements are common in politics, but such issues should be handled internally and peacefully to protect the unity of the party.
He stressed that leaders within the APC were already aware of the complaints being raised and would address them appropriately.
The former Benue governor stated that maintaining peace and stability within the party remains one of his major priorities. He noted that the APC in Benue has come a long way and should not allow internal disagreements to weaken its structure.
Akume also reminded party members that he was among the founding figures who helped build the APC and therefore understands the importance of fairness, consultation, and unity within political organisations.
Speaking confidently about his political experience, the SGF declared that he has spent decades participating in Nigerian politics and understands how electoral processes work.
“I have seen elections before; I’ve been in this game for a long time since 1998, and I want to say that I’m always very, very sure of what I say,” Akume stated.
His remarks have since attracted reactions from political observers and party supporters, with many interpreting the statement as a sign of confidence in the APC’s internal processes and future electoral plans.
During the interaction with journalists, Akume explained that his visit to Benue was partly aimed at mobilising support for the party’s presidential primary election scheduled to hold on Saturday.
The SGF further urged party members to move past the controversies surrounding the earlier primaries and focus on strengthening the APC ahead of future political contests.
According to him, unity among members would be critical if the party hopes to maintain its political dominance in the state and at the national level.
Political analysts say Akume’s intervention may help calm tensions within sections of the Benue APC, especially among aggrieved aspirants and supporters still dissatisfied with the outcome of the primaries.
Others believe the comments reflect growing efforts by senior APC leaders to consolidate support for President Tinubu’s expected re-election campaign ahead of 2027.
As preparations for future elections continue gathering momentum across Nigeria, Akume’s statements are expected to remain part of wider discussions about party unity, internal democracy, and political strategy within the ruling APC.
