Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has submitted his African Democratic Congress (ADC) nomination form for the 2027 presidential election, declaring that it is time to “save Nigeria from despair”.

Atiku shared the development on his X page alongside photos and a video showing him at the ADC national headquarters in Abuja to formally submit the form.

“The march to restore prosperity and better days to our beloved nation took a firm and decisive step forward today at the National Secretariat of our great party, the African Democratic Congress,” he wrote.

“This is more than a political journey; it is a national movement rooted in hope, renewal, and the collective resolve to save Nigeria from despair.”

The former vice-president called on Nigerians across regions, religions, and political backgrounds to support what he described as a national rescue mission.

“Together, we will restore the promise of our nation and bring good times back again,” he said.

Atiku has contested for Nigeria’s presidency six times, although he has appeared on the presidential ballot as a candidate on three occasions — in 2007, 2019, and 2023.

He contested the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), finishing second with 6,984,520 votes behind President Bola Tinubu, who secured 8,794,726 votes.

Before the 2023 election, Atiku had pursued the presidency several times, beginning with his 1993 bid under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In 2007, he contested as the presidential candidate of the Action Congress (AC) but finished third behind the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

He also sought the PDP presidential ticket in 2011 but lost to then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

In 2015, Atiku contested for the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost at the primaries to Buhari, who later defeated Jonathan in the general election.

He returned to the PDP in 2019 and secured the party’s presidential ticket, eventually contesting against Buhari, who was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
