The Lagos State government says it will soon launch a state-issued driver’s licence in partnership with the federal government as part of efforts to improve road safety and traffic management.

Speaking on Monday during a press briefing in Ikeja, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the commissioner for transportation, said Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos State, is expected to approve the rollout of the initiative within the next few weeks.

“Our Lagos driver’s licence will be launched in a couple of weeks as we get a nod from Mr Governor,” he said.

Osiyemi explained that motorists would be able to choose between obtaining the federal driver’s licence or the Lagos-issued version.

According to him, the initiative is aimed at improving efficiency in the licensing process and addressing delays currently experienced by applicants.

The commissioner disclosed that 56,876 driver’s licences were processed during the review period. This figure includes 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals handled in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

He also stated that 1,158 international driving permits were processed within the same period.

Speaking on rail transportation projects in the state, Osiyemi said the second phase of the Blue Line rail project, extending from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027 to allow full commercial operations.

He added that the first phase of the Blue Line transported 3.5 million passengers in 2025.

On the Red Line project, the commissioner said the Lagos State Government had procured 24 new train coaches arranged into three sets of eight-coach trains to improve passenger movement along the corridor.

Osiyemi further revealed that work has intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Green Line rail project, which is expected to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.
