The chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Ismail Abba Yusuf has expressed his displeasure over the quality of meals served to Nigerians pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.

Yusuf also rejected in its entirety the alleged violations of health and packaging regulations with respect to the meals.

In a statement issued by the commission’s management, NAHCON disclosed that Saudi health authorities had continued to enforce strict food safety standards during the ongoing Hajj operations, particularly due to prevailing weather conditions in the Kingdom.

The statement said some dinner meals served on Tuesday night, May 27, 2026, failed to meet the required handling and packaging standards.

The commission’s chairman also said that the said meal was immediately rejected in collaboration with Saudi officials.

“To cushion the impact on affected pilgrims, the service support company reportedly provided alternative light refreshments, while members of the NAHCON board moved round to brief state officials and managers on the development,” the statement said.

It also added that Yusuf has directed an immediate investigation commission’s security committee to investigate the caterers involved and those who facilitated the contracts.

In addition, the chairman ordered a separate investigation into some tour operators accused of bringing in more pilgrims than they officially registered and allegedly exploiting unsuspecting pilgrims during the Hajj exercise.

Also, any operator found culpable at the end of investigations would face sanctions, including withdrawal of operating licences.

NAHCON further disclosed that arrangements had already commenced for immediate refunds to pilgrims affected by the meal incident.

The commission appreciated the understanding of the pilgrims and assured them of its continued commitment to their welfare and safety throughout the Hajj period.

“NAHCON appreciates the understanding of the pilgrims and reassures all of its continued commitment to their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise,” the statement said.
