Christine Auma could not hold back her tears as she opened up about how she allegedly lost more than KSh 1 million to her best friend.

“Initially, my mother-in-law was my preferred person to receive money from me while I worked abroad. Unfortunately, she passed away, and I had to find another recipient. I did not want to involve any other family member because I did not trust them, and I also did not choose my husband because I did not want money to cause conflict between us at some point. That is why I chose my best friend,” she said.

How much was Auma sending her best friend monthly?

Over the years, Auma regularly sent money to her friend for various purposes, especially for savings in a bank account.

She explained that her monthly salary ranged between KSh 29,000 and KSh 34,000, depending on exchange rates, and she faithfully sent the money to her friend.

“We had plans together, and I also had dreams for my family. One of the plans I had with my best friend was starting a business selling animal feeds, diapers, and other products. I also wanted to give my family a better life after returning to Kenya. I had even secured land and planned to use my savings to complete the payment once I came back.

“She used to send me bank statements after I transferred money, but she only did that for the first three months. Later, she claimed she had lost her phone and was using a smaller phone that made it difficult to send transaction statements. I did not know she was hiding something,” Auma shared.

Despite the lack of updates, Auma continued sending money to her friend for four years until she returned to Kenya after experiencing difficulties in Saudi Arabia.

She visited the bank expecting to find enough savings to help her start a business and improve her family’s life.

“When I checked my bank statement, I was shocked. I just held my head in disbelief. I found only KSh 88,485. I was expecting at least KSh 1.5 million because sometimes I would also receive tips and send that money to her.

When I called her, she told me her father had been sick and she used the money for his treatment. Even when I asked her about the business she had promised would be a surprise, she started giving excuses. I cannot explain how broken, confused, and stressed I felt. I have nowhere to start from and nothing to do,” she said.

Nairobi woman goes missing in Saudi

In another story, Yvonne Vugutsa travelled to Saudi Arabia in January 2024 in search of greener pastures after signing a two-year contract.

After completing her contract, she reportedly fell ill, and it was alleged that her employer abandoned her, making it difficult for her to return to Nairobi.

Her family grew worried after losing contact with her at the beginning of 2026, when she was expected to return home.
