Nigeria is set to open its first dedicated science museum to the public on May 21, marking a significant milestone in the country’s scientific and educational development.

The NAS–T.Y. Danjuma Museum and Library, situated in Abuja, was funded and commissioned in 2025 by retired General Theophilus Danjuma.

The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) announced the upcoming opening in a press release signed by its President, Professor Abubakar Sambo, and Public Affairs Secretary, Professor Chinedum Babalola.

According to the statement, the facility is designed to serve as a vibrant hub for interactive exhibitions, scientific learning, and access to a broad range of educational resources.

It is expected to cater to students, researchers, educators, and members of the general public, with the overarching goal of nurturing curiosity, stimulating innovation, and deepening appreciation for science and its contribution to national development.

The museum will accommodate school visits, organized group tours, and themed exhibitions, offering hands-on learning opportunities and fostering collaboration among various groups.

On the academic front, the facility is expected to play a meaningful role in strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education across Nigeria.

In addition to permanent exhibits, specialized themed exhibitions will be organized on a regular basis.

The academy also expressed openness to partnerships with corporate organizations, development agencies, and other stakeholders interested in supporting the museum’s long-term growth and sustainability.

As part of the opening ceremony, a public lecture on cancer care, immunotherapy, and precision oncology and their implications for research, treatment, and health policy in Nigeria will be delivered by Professor Kunle Odunsi, Director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Centre.

The event will also feature the induction of seven distinguished individuals as Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
