A major maritime operation along the Badagry-Ajara corridor has exposed a large-scale fuel smuggling attempt, as naval forces intercepted thousands of litres of petrol being secretly moved through waterways in Lagos State.

The Nigerian Navy has announced a successful anti-smuggling operation along the Badagry-Ajara corridor in Lagos State, resulting in the seizure of more than 6,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

The operation was carried out by personnel from Forward Operating Base (FOB) Badagry, acting on intelligence about smuggling activities in the area.

In a statement signed by Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Navy explained that the mission was part of its broader and continuous effort to disrupt illegal fuel trafficking and block the movement of petroleum products through unauthorized border routes.

During the operation, naval officers uncovered approximately 240 jerrycans, each containing 25 litres of petrol, which had been carefully hidden and were being prepared for illegal shipment through the Badagry border waterways.

The recovered fuel was transported back to FOB Badagry for further processing in line with standard procedures.

The Navy described the operation as a reflection of its sustained commitment to dismantling the supply chains that enable cross-border smuggling, particularly the illegal diversion of petroleum products through coastal and waterway routes.

It further stated that it would maintain operational pressure across key border corridors to deny criminal networks the ability to exploit Nigeria’s maritime environment for economic sabotage.
