Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has indicated that talks are ongoing towards a possible alliance with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso spoke on Sunday during a live interview on Trust TV, where he suggested that both camps share similar political goals and may eventually work together under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC.

Speaking on the possibility of an Obi-Kwankwaso joint ticket in 2027, the former governor said discussions between both political movements had shown strong similarities in ideology and national objectives.

“I believe so, and taking into the party, I think that is their mindset,” Kwankwaso said during the interview.

He explained that recent engagements between members of the Kwankwasiyya movement and supporters of Obi, popularly known as Obidients, revealed that both groups were pushing for the same national interest.

According to him, the focus remains on improving the country and addressing the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians, especially young people struggling with unemployment, insecurity and poor access to opportunities.

“In recent times, we actually tried to check what the Obidients were up to politically and what they want to do for Nigeria, and of course, when we compare the two movements, we realized that our goal is more or less the same,” he stated.

Kwankwaso added that experts from both sides were already reviewing policy directions and development plans with the aim of identifying areas of alignment.

“In fact, we have gone so far, but based on our discussions with them, I believe we have one target: to make Nigeria a better place,” he said.

Recall, both Obi and Kwankwaso were major contenders in the 2023 presidential election. Obi contested under the Labour Party, while Kwankwaso flew the flag of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.
