Nigerian Troops Intercept Over 400 Starlink Devices Allegedly Used by Terrorists in North-East Operations

Nigerian troops have reportedly intercepted more than 400 Starlink satellite internet devices allegedly being used by terrorist groups operating in the country’s North-East region, in what security officials describe as a major breakthrough in counter-insurgency operations.

The equipment was recovered during recent intelligence-led operations under Operation HADIN KAI, a military campaign targeting Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) networks in the Lake Chad Basin area.

According to a senior military source, the devices were discovered alongside other communication equipment believed to have been used to support coordination, logistics, and communication between insurgent cells operating in remote forested locations.

Although full details of the seizure have not been independently verified, military officials claim the large cache of satellite internet devices points to an evolving pattern in terrorist communication strategies, moving from traditional radio systems to more advanced, internet-based technologies.

Starlink, a satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, is designed to provide high-speed connectivity in underserved and remote areas. However, security analysts have raised concerns that such technologies can be exploited by non-state armed groups due to their portability and ability to function in areas with little or no conventional telecommunications coverage.

Military authorities say the discovery underscores ongoing efforts by insurgent groups to adopt modern digital tools to enhance operational efficiency and evade surveillance.

The Nigerian Armed Forces have intensified operations in recent months across the North-East, with increased aerial surveillance, ground offensives, and intelligence-sharing efforts aimed at disrupting terrorist supply chains and communication networks.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Starlink or its parent company, SpaceX, regarding the alleged interception of its devices.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine how the equipment was acquired, transported, and deployed within insurgent-controlled territories.
