The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s sports sector through far-reaching reforms, increased investment, and infrastructure development, while positioning sports as a driver of national identity, youth empowerment, and economic growth.

Speaking at a media briefing of inaugural meeting of the Main Organising committee of the Games, on Tuesday in Abuja, the Commission commended the strong partnership with the media, describing it as a critical pillar in advancing the national sports development agenda.

The NSC also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as sustained political will toward sports development, noting his support through policy direction, improved funding, structural reforms, and initiatives aimed at enhancing athlete welfare and performance.

According to him, ongoing reforms are anchored on a broader vision that goes beyond competition, positioning sports as a viable economic sector capable of creating opportunities for athletes, administrators, journalists, and entrepreneurs within the sports business ecosystem.

On infrastructure, the NSC highlighted ongoing upgrades and rehabilitation of sporting facilities across the country, with particular emphasis on Lagos State, which it identified as a major hub for sports development. The Commission noted that several facilities are being upgraded to meet international standards for hosting continental and global competitions.

It further disclosed ongoing efforts to improve stadium pitches, athletics tracks, and spectator facilities nationwide, as part of a broader plan to reposition Nigeria as a leading sports destination in Africa.

The Commission also expressed confidence in Nigeria’s readiness to host upcoming international sporting events, citing Lagos as prepared for major athletics and fencing competitions, alongside other global engagements.

The NSC called on all stakeholders to support its reform agenda, stressing the importance of collaboration in achieving sustainable growth in the sector. It also pointed to the upcoming National Intermediate Games as a key milestone in restructuring Nigeria’s sports development pathway.

The Chairman of the MOC and Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the Intermediate Games as a historic initiative designed to bridge the gap between the National Youth Games and elite competitions, ensuring talent is not lost in transition.

He added that the Games will provide structure, opportunity, and long-term pathways for athletes while strengthening Nigeria’s position in global sports development.
