Oyo Kidnap Crisis: Why DHQ’s “No Terror Base in South-West” Claim Raises Questions

Tension continues to grip public discourse following the May 15, 2026 abduction of at least 25 students and seven teachers from schools in Ahoro-Esinele community, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The incident, which has unsettled the South-West, turned even more tragic after reports emerged that the kidnapped mathematics teacher, Michael Oyedokun, was killed by the abductors, further deepening public anger and fear.

Eyewitness accounts and circulating videos showing distressed victims pleading with armed captors have intensified outrage across the country. In one widely shared footage, a woman carrying a toddler was seen begging for mercy, underscoring the human toll of the attack.

In response to the growing insecurity concerns, federal and state authorities have issued several statements. The Presidency directed security agencies to track down the perpetrators, while the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, visited affected areas as part of ongoing security assessments. The Oyo State Government also stated it was working with relevant agencies to secure the release of the victims.

The Defence Headquarters, Abuja, through its Director of Defence Media Operations, Michael Onoja, confirmed that the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, condemned the attacks on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele; and L.A. Primary School, describing them as “callous and reprehensible.”

However, controversy has trailed the military’s assertion that there is “no terrorist base in the South-West,” insisting instead that intelligence does not support claims of any entrenched terrorist infrastructure in the region.

The DHQ further described the Oriire abduction as an “isolated criminal act,” adding that previous clearance operations within the Old Oyo National Park had weakened criminal elements operating in the area.

It maintained that the armed forces remain committed to rescuing the abducted students and teachers and restoring calm to affected communities.

Despite this position, concerns persist among residents and observers who point to repeated abductions across parts of Ogun, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti States, questioning whether the absence of a “fixed base” truly reflects the operational reality of armed groups.

Critics also reference the strategic terrain around Old Oyo National Park, which borders Oriire LGA, arguing that vast forest reserves may be providing cover for criminal networks despite official claims of clearance operations.

Some analysts further draw historical parallels with earlier reports of armed groups exploiting remote forest corridors across parts of the North-Central and South-West, including references to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, to illustrate the evolving nature of insecurity in Nigeria.

As search-and-rescue operations continue, families of the abducted victims remain in anguish, while public debate intensifies over the true scale, structure, and geography of armed criminal activity in the South-West and beyond.
