President Bola Tinubu Distributes 20 Trucks of Rice Across 36 States to Cushion Hardship, Says Presidential Aide

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has distributed 20 trucks of rice to each of Nigeria’s 36 states as part of efforts to ease the impact of economic hardship on citizens, according to a statement from presidential aide Abdullahi Yakasa.

Yakasa said the rice distribution is one of several palliative measures rolled out by the federal government to support households struggling with rising food prices and the cost of living. The trucks were dispatched to state governments for onward distribution to vulnerable residents across the country.

“The President understands the pressure Nigerians are facing, and this is part of the immediate relief being provided,” Yakasa stated. He explained that the rice intervention is designed to reach low-income families, particularly in urban and rural communities where food inflation has hit hardest over the past year.

The distribution comes as food prices remain elevated following the removal of fuel subsidies, currency adjustments, and broader inflationary pressures. Rice is a staple in most Nigerian households, and its price has been a key concern for families trying to manage household budgets.

Each state is expected to receive 20 trucks of rice, which will then be channeled through state governments, local authorities, and community structures. Yakasa said the federal government is working with state officials to ensure the food gets to those who need it most and not diverted for political purposes.

“This is not about politics. It’s about putting food on the table for Nigerians who are struggling right now,” he said.

The move adds to other relief measures announced earlier, including cash transfers, grain releases from the national reserve, and support for small-scale farmers. The government has maintained that these steps are temporary cushions while longer-term policies on food production, security, and the economy take effect.

Reactions from citizens have been mixed. Some residents who have received the rice say it provides short-term relief and helps reduce pressure on household spending. Others argue that 20 trucks per state is insufficient given the population size and the scale of the hardship, calling for more sustained and transparent distribution.

Civil society groups have urged both federal and state governments to publish clear distribution lists and monitoring mechanisms to prevent hoarding and ensure accountability. They stress that public trust in palliative programs depends on transparency.

For the Tinubu administration, the rice distribution is framed as a direct response to public concerns about affordability and hunger. Whether it significantly eases the burden remains to be seen, but the federal government says more interventions are being planned as part of its economic stabilization efforts.

The distribution is ongoing, with states expected to begin sharing the rice to communities in the coming days….See More
