The 30-year-old woman passed away on Monday, May 5, at the home of her employer, who is said to be a police officer.

Brenda worked as a cleaner, popularly known as a “Mama Fua”, in Mombasa’s Kiembeni area, where she also lived.

Following the circumstances surrounding her death, her grieving family sought justice and called for investigations to establish exactly what happened to her.

This came after it emerged that she had marks resembling burns on various parts of her body, including her legs and hands.

What caused Rachael Brenda Opiyo’s death?

An autopsy conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor, alongside the family’s pathologist, revealed that Brenda died from a heart attack caused by thyroid complications.

Johansen dismissed claims that she had suffered burns or had been struck by electricity. He further explained why some parts of her body appeared burnt.

“Our findings were that the late Brenda had actually been unwell. She had an enlarged thyroid gland, which led to heart failure. Controversial reports were claiming she had been burnt, but those areas appeared to be post-mortem skin changes and slippage, considering she was found in an exposed area,” he said.

Nonetheless, samples of her skin were taken for further analysis to determine the extent of any chemical alterations to the body, as well as for toxicology examinations.

“We checked to see whether she had been struck by electricity, but we did not find any patterns on her body suggesting that,” Johansen added.

The family, who said they were satisfied with the autopsy results, also confirmed that Brenda had been battling a thyroid illness.

Her mother, Janet Ouma, said she had accepted the findings and would now begin preparations to lay her daughter to rest.

“I am satisfied with the results of the post-mortem; that is all I have to say. It is true she had a thyroid disease, and it had become bigger,” she said.

The late Brenda is survived by her husband and two children.
