The Yusufu Bala Usman Institute has announced the death of its Chairman, Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba, who passed away peacefully at his residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on May 14, 2026.
The announcement was made in a statement titled: “Notice of Passing of our Chairman, Dr. Samuel Olusegun Osoba,” signed by the institute’s Director, Norma Perchonock.
According to the statement, Dr. Osoba died at the age of 92 after dedicating his life to scholarship, research and public enlightenment on issues surrounding capitalism, neo-colonialism and national development in Nigeria.
The institute described him as an exceptional scholar whose teachings and writings focused on exposing economic structures that hindered development and perpetuated exploitation in the country. It noted that his academic contributions in economic history significantly shaped debates on Nigeria’s political and economic future.
Dr. Osoba was also celebrated for his extensive publications, which ranged from scholarly books and research papers to newspaper articles and opinion columns that reached a broad audience.
One of his most notable contributions was co-authoring The Minority Report and Draft Constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1976 alongside his longtime associate, Yusufu Bala Usman. The institute said the document played a major role in national discussions on constitutional and political reforms.
Describing his death as a great loss, the institute stated that Dr. Osoba left behind a lasting legacy of patriotism, intellectual courage and commitment to justice and national development.
Funeral arrangements, according to the statement, will be announced by the family.
