Lagos residents are in shock after a viral video showed two women who brought pepper mixed with maggots to a grinding machine at the popular Mile 12 market.
According to a lady who witnessed the incident and shared the story online, the two women arrived with sacks of pepper that were already crawling with maggots. They wanted to grind it into powder. One of the women was caught on the spot by angry market women and handed over to security agents, while the other managed to escape.
Eyewitnesses said the pepper was smelling badly and full of worms. Many believe the women planned to sell the ground pepper in the market or repackage it for unsuspecting buyers.
The arrested woman is said to be in police custody, while traders have called for stricter checks at grinding spots across Lagos.
Social media has been on fire with reactions. @LagosPepperGirl wrote: “Maggots? These people want to kill us with food! Mile 12 people, una dey try. Arrest all of them!”
@NaijaFoodWatch posted: “This is pure wickedness. Imagine buying pepper and it’s full of maggots. God save us in this country!”@AbuleEkoMama added: “The one wey escape, make dem find her. This kind business must stop. Our children dey eat this thing!”
Many Nigerians are now warning people to check their foodstuffs very well before buying or grinding.
