Tension is rising after Nigeria’s Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, sent a strong warning to anyone within the armed forces accused of plotting to topple President Bola Tinubu’s government.

During a high-level strategy session in Abuja marking his first 100 days in office, the Air Chief didn’t mince words. He described reports of an attempted coup as disgraceful and completely unacceptable, vowing that anyone found culpable would be dealt with strictly under the law.

He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Air Force remains loyal to the Constitution and the country’s democratic leadership, stressing that the military’s duty is to protect, not politicize. Commanders were reminded to maintain discipline and unity, especially as the nation edges closer to another election season.

Security sources previously indicated that dozens of military personnel and civilians were arrested over an alleged coup scheme uncovered late last year, though families of some suspects are reportedly appealing for fairness in the legal process.

Beyond the coup allegations, the Air Chief also raised alarm over growing regional instability, particularly in parts of the Sahel, warning that extremist movements and shifting alliances pose serious risks to Nigeria. He noted concerns about reported militant expansion into new areas while acknowledging improvements in oil security and reduced sabotage in the Niger Delta.

His message was clear: loyalty to democracy is non-negotiable — and any attempt to undermine it will carry heavy consequences.
