The appointments took effect from 18 April for an initial four-year term.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi as the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD).

Before the development, Emezue Ebinepre served as Director-General in an acting capacity.

According to the statement, the appointments, which took effect from 18 April, were made in accordance with Section 7 (1) and (3) of the National Centre for Women Development (Amendment) Act, 2023.

The appointment letter was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana.

In 2023, Mrs Benjamins-Laniyi was appointed Mandate Secretary to head the newly created Federal Capital Territory’s Women Affairs Secretariat.

For the Governing Council, President Tinubu appointed Princess Idonije as Chairperson, alongside Lois Auta, Jamila Sarki, Aisha Baiyee, Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, and Anne Agom-Eze.

The president congratulated the Director-General and members of the Governing Council on their appointments and extended his best wishes.

The women-focused Centre is the federal agency responsible for promoting women’s development and gender mainstreaming in Nigeria.

Established in 1992, the Centre was modelled after the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW).
