The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has expelled 11 members and suspended 14 others following allegations of disobedience to decisions and resolutions of its National Executive Council (NEC).

The decision was announced after an emergency NEC meeting held on Monday in Lagos and later confirmed during a briefing by Festus Osifo, the TUC President-General.

Osifo said the disciplinary action was based on the report of a committee set up on April 27 to investigate cases of alleged misconduct within the union.

He explained that the committee was tasked with examining incidents of “flagrant disobedience” among members and officials, ensuring fair hearing for those involved, and recommending appropriate sanctions where necessary.

According to him, the committee submitted its report within seven working days, after which the NEC reviewed and adopted its recommendations.

He said those expelled were drawn from state councils in Lagos, Rivers, Enugu, and Bayelsa.

Osifo stated that the expelled individuals immediately ceased to be members or representatives of the congress and were barred from participating in any TUC activities or using its name, symbols, or platforms.

He further directed them to return all union property in their possession, including documents, identity cards, stamps, and financial materials.

The TUC president also warned organisations, government agencies, and the public against dealing with the affected persons as representatives of the union.

In addition, 14 officers were suspended for two years over related allegations, with Osifo stating that they would not take part in any official TUC functions during the suspension period.

He reaffirmed that discipline remains essential to maintaining unity and stability within the labour organisation, urging members to respect its constitution and leadership structures.
