Former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu remains in British custody as he continues serving his 9-year-8-month prison sentence over the UK’s landmark organ trafficking case.

Ekweremadu, who was sentenced on May 5, 2023, is expected to remain behind bars until around mid-2027 before becoming eligible for standard release on licence, subject to prison and supervision conditions.

The former senator has reportedly spent over three years in custody, including time served since his arrest in 2022. He is believed to still be held at HM Prison Wandsworth in the United Kingdom.

The UK government previously rejected Nigeria’s request to transfer him back home, insisting that he complete his sentence under British jurisdiction.

His wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, who received a shorter sentence in the same case, was released earlier and reportedly returned to Nigeria in January 2026.

No fresh court hearings or official release developments have been announced, although diplomatic discussions surrounding his situation are said to be ongoing.
