A nurse at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital (VTRH) has been arrested after allegedly taking money from the family of a woman who had just given birth.

The nurse, identified as Morine, is being held at Mbale Police Station as investigations continue into the case that has sparked outrage among residents in Vihiga County.
According to journalist Herman Kamariki, the incident unfolded shortly after a woman successfully delivered at the referral hospital.

Her husband reportedly went to settle the hospital bill so that his wife and newborn baby could be discharged and allowed to go home.

However, the process allegedly turned into hours of confusion and distress after the nurse repeatedly informed him that the Social Health Authority (SHA) system was not functioning, making it impossible to process the payment through official channels.
The man is said to have made several calls seeking help as the delay stretched on, worried that his wife and child would remain stranded at the facility.
It is alleged that the nurse later instructed him to pay the bill in cash before eventually asking him to send the money directly to her personal mobile number.
Documents indicate that the nurse received KSh 19,100 from the family but allegedly failed to remit the money to the hospital.
The matter was later escalated to hospital management, triggering internal action and the arrest of the suspect over claims of fraud and theft.
As of the time of filing this report, the hospital had yet to make an official statement regarding the incident, but details indicate that several employees are under investigation.
The suspect is expected to be handed over to officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for further investigations and possible charges related to fraud and theft from patients.
