Who Remembers the Story of Emmanuel, 17, Who Drowned While His Friends Watched and Did Nothing?

It has been several years, but the story of Emmanuel Balogun still leaves a heavy feeling in the chest for anyone who comes across it.

Back in 2019, a 17-year-old undergraduate of the University of Abuja lost his life under circumstances that many still struggle to understand. Emmanuel Balogun was at Dome Hotel in Abuja with three friends. What should have been a regular night out among young men turned into something no family should ever have to experience.

According to details that later emerged, Emmanuel got into the swimming pool with his three companions in the early hours of the morning. The time was around 3:33am. At some point, he began to struggle. He was fighting to stay above water, right there in front of them.

And they watched.

None of them screamed for help. None of them alerted hotel staff. None of them jumped in to pull him out. They stood by and let him drown.

When Emmanuel stopped moving, they did not raise any alarm. Instead, they walked away. They took his belongings. One of them wore his shoes. They left the hotel and returned to school as if nothing had happened.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel’s parents had no idea their son was gone. Days passed. It was not until Monday, after a fellow student made a strange call, that fear began to creep in. Emmanuel’s phone was off. He was not in his hostel. That was when his parents started a desperate search that took them from the University of Abuja to Dome Hotel, and finally to the mortuary.

And there he was. Their son. Lifeless.

Toktok9ja Media gathered that what makes this story even harder to accept is what came out later during investigations. One of the boys reportedly wanted to raise an alarm, but the others stopped him. Their reason? That Emmanuel was doing “shakara” for them. This was the same Emmanuel who had paid for all three of them. The same Emmanuel who bought the fish they all ate together. Another friend claimed that Emmanuel was always the center of attention when it came to women.

Jealousy. Envy. Resentment. All over things as shallow as who got more looks from the opposite sex and who came from what background.

This was not just an accident. It was neglect. It was silence. It was betrayal.

A young life cut short not only by water but by the cold hearts of people he called friends.

Stories like this force you to pause. Not everyone around you is truly on your side. Not every smile carries good intentions. Sometimes, the real danger is not far away. It is right next to you, laughing with you, eating your food, wearing your shoes after you are gone.

Emmanuel Balogun trusted the wrong people. And he paid the ultimate price.

May his soul continue to rest in peace.
