Bauchi teenager in police custody over teen’s drowning

The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old, Aisanu Nura, over the alleged drowning of a 17-year-old boy, Abdullahi Muhammad, in Kari Village, Darazo Local Government Area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, Nafiu Habib, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to him, the incident was reported to the Darazo Divisional Police Headquarters on May 24, 2026.

Habib said, “A report was received at the Darazo Divisional Police Headquarters alleging that one Abdullahi Muhammad, male, aged 17 years, of Kari Village, drowned in the Kari River under circumstances suspected to involve one Aisanu Nura, male, aged 18 years, also of the same address.”

He explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly lured the deceased to the river and caused him to drown.

The police spokesman added that operatives attached to the Darazo Division swiftly responded to the scene, arrested the suspect, and commenced a preliminary investigation.

He noted that the victim’s body had yet to be recovered, adding that search operations were ongoing.

“The body of the deceased is yet to be recovered, and search efforts are ongoing,” Habib stated.

He further disclosed that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Bauchi, for a discreet and thorough investigation.

Habib disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, had directed a professional and diligent probe to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He added that the police commissioner assured the public that justice would be served in accordance with the law and that anyone found culpable would face prosecution.

The command also urged parents and guardians to intensify the supervision of teenagers and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
