The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that only the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP) will participate in the upcoming Kebbi State House of Assembly by-election scheduled for June 20, 2026.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kebbi State, Abubakar Sarkin Pawa Dambo, during a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the election.
According to Dambo, political parties were given a submission window between May 22 and May 26 to present their candidates in compliance with the provisions of Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2026.
However, after the deadline elapsed, only the APC and Labour Party successfully completed and met all the commission’s requirements, making them the only eligible parties for the by-election.
He also reminded the participating parties to submit the names of their polling agents no later than June 10, 2026.
Dambo disclosed that electioneering campaigns officially began on June 10 and are expected to end on June 18, two days before voters head to the polls.
The electoral commissioner stated that the election will be conducted using the existing voter register and called on political parties, voters, security agencies, and other stakeholders to work together to ensure a peaceful and credible exercise.
The by-election will take place across 10 wards in Zuru Local Government Area, including six wards located within the Zuru metropolis, with a total of 200 polling units set to be used.
INEC further revealed that 109,292 registered voters are expected to participate in the poll, while 822 trained ad hoc personnel have been deployed to ensure a smooth electoral process.
The by-election became necessary following the death of Usman Muhammad Zuru, the lawmaker who represented the constituency and who also served as Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly earlier this year.
With only two parties in the race, political observers are closely watching what is expected to be a keenly contested battle between the APC and Labour Party for the vacant legislative seat.
