  • EFCC and INEC have announced plans to work more closely ahead of the 2027 elections, with a focus on combating vote buying and electoral offences.
  • The move has sparked debate online, with some Nigerians welcoming the initiative while others remain doubtful about its impact on electoral credibility.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have pledged to strengthen collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections as part of efforts to tackle vote buying, electoral fraud, and other financial crimes linked to the electoral process.

The commitment was highlighted during a meeting between an INEC official, Obo Effanga, and the EFCC Acting Zonal Director, Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, where both institutions discussed ways to deepen cooperation in addressing electoral offences and promoting credible elections.

The development has generated mixed reactions online, with supporters describing the partnership as a positive step toward improving electoral integrity, while critics expressed skepticism over whether the collaboration would translate into meaningful reforms on election day.

The proposed partnership comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum, with increasing calls from civil society groups and voters for transparent elections and stricter enforcement of electoral laws.

Some Nigerians questioned the effectiveness of the arrangement, citing concerns about the perceived independence of public institutions and the handling of previous elections. Others argued that closer cooperation between anti-corruption agencies and electoral bodies could help curb vote buying and strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
