A 14-year-old student at Police Secondary School in Minna, Yahaya Ibrahim Tafida, tragically lost his life to a lightning strike in Lapai, the administrative center of Lapai Local Government Area in Niger State.

Mohammed Musa, a local resident, recounted to Daily Trust that the incident happened around 6pm on Monday, June 8, 2026, while the young boy and his friends were enjoying a game of football at the Government Girls’ Day Secondary School’s field.

According to Musa, the group sought refuge beneath a tree when a heavy rain accompanied by fierce wind suddenly swept through the area.

“When the rain and windstorm began, they couldn’t get home, so they took cover under a tree. Without warning, lightning struck, and the boy was killed instantly,” he explained.

The community was deeply shaken by the tragedy, and residents have been mourning the loss since.
