Security officers are once again under scrutiny over allegations of using excessive force during protests by students of Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU).

It was a chaotic scene as students scattered and ran for safety after police officers in civilian clothes entered the institution.
Hussein Khalid condemns brutal police force
The officers were armed with pistols and tear gas canisters as they dispersed students during the protest on campus.
CCTV footage captured the officers in action, roaming around the university and entering student dormitories, where they allegedly used force, angering many Kenyans.

“The videos we have seen of plain-clothes police officers roaming around the campus, entering dormitories and allegedly shooting inside them are something we cannot allow to happen in this country. It is very unfortunate that today, when Kenyans come out to exercise their constitutional rights, they are met with brutal force from the very security agencies that are supposed to protect those rights,” said human rights defender and Executive Director of Vocal Africa, Hussein Khalid.
One man whose brother was allegedly injured by a live bullet during the protests expressed his anger and demanded justice.
Jesse Mureithi speaks after MMU brother is shot
Jesse Mureithi said his younger brother, Victor, suffered a serious neck injury and questioned why the police had used such force.
“I love my brother very much, and when I heard that he had been injured, it hurt me deeply. Tell me, why are the police using live bullets on students?” he asked.
He was not the only one devastated. Victor’s mother also broke down in tears, expressing her fury and disbelief over the alleged use of live ammunition.
“All police officers should know and understand that these are our children. We gave birth to them. Even the police officer doing this to our children, I plead with you, please leave our children alone. Even if they need discipline, there are other ways to handle them. Why use excessive force?” cried Alice Mureithi, Victor’s mother.

The incident angered social media users, who flocked to the comment section to share their opinions and reactions.

“I think we must understand that there are police officers who are against Ruto. They are loyal to Uhuru, Kinoti, and the rest, so when there are demonstrations, they take advantage of the situation to sabotage the government by killing innocent Kenyans.”

“This is beyond inhuman. What have the students done to deserve that? But God will fight for us where we cannot stretch our hands to fight back.”

Kitui police stop bus ferrying ammunition
In another story, a multi-agency security team manning a roadblock at Kanyonyoo along the Thika–Garissa Highway intercepted a passenger bus ferrying a cache of ammunition and government stores, thwarting what could have been a serious security threat.

In a statement issued on Sunday, May 3, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the bus, registration number KCW 208A, belonging to Buscar Sacco, was travelling from Lamu to Nairobi when it was flagged down for a routine inspection.
During the search, officers were shocked to discover several rounds of ammunition concealed inside a suspicious blue metallic box.
