However, his efforts were not enough, as the money he earned from the hustle could not cater for all his needs.

“I was told to inform my parents that if I did not manage to raise the fees one way or another, they would arrange a special exam for me. The only option left was to postpone my studies and fight to raise the school fees. As a young man, you go through challenges and difficulties. I believe hardships make you stronger. So I decided to leave campus activities and move back to the streets to survive and find school fees,” he said.

Zacharia’s story touched well-wishers, who contributed money to help him, enabling him to return to school and complete his studies in Laboratory Science at St. John’s University in Dodoma.

He worked hard to repay the faith shown in him by compassionate Tanzanians and eventually graduated with flying colours.

This is my professional laboratory license. I thank God and all Tanzanians. I also obtained my university certificate and transcript,” he said.

The young man hoped his life would change for the better immediately, but he still experienced challenges as he did not get employed right away.

He did not lose hope, continuing to apply for jobs and even taking work in a restaurant, where he worked for a few years before leaving.

“I received a call from Masana Hospital for an interview. I attended the interview, passed, and was offered a volunteer position. For a full year, I worked without formal employment. After that year, I received an official employment contract. My hard work finally paid off. After one year of volunteering, the hospital management recognised my abilities and formally employed me,” he said.
