Francis Wanjohi, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, said in a report by NTV Kenya that he was once in what many would have considered a “perfect marriage”.

To him, the union felt like a dream marriage, as even outsiders admired and wished to emulate their relationship.

“That only lasted for the first three years, but then I messed it up with my own hands. And it was not by cheating or having an affair outside marriage. For those good years, we were always together. If you saw me somewhere, you would be sure my wife was also around and vice versa,” he explained.

How did Francis Wanjohi ruin his marriage?

Wanjohi recalled the advice he began receiving from his male friends, commonly referred to as the ‘men’s conference’.

He shared that his fellow men often criticised him for always texting, calling, and spending so much time with his wife.

They told him that, as a man, he had no business being home early while the children were still awake and his wife was watching soap operas.

To his friends, a man should get home at least 30 minutes past 11 p.m. or even midnight.

“They told me all this time I should be with the men because that is where money was coming from. My peers were the ones giving me business; these were doctors and engineers with money. They would insist I come and sit with them,” he said.

Wanjohi noted that at the time, he believed his friends were right. As a learned man, he felt his wife did not require his constant attention at home as long as he was providing financially.

He did not want to be seen as the “weak link” in the men’s conference and would stay out late discussing business and other matters.

Eventually, the frequent texting, calling, and communication with his wife stopped as he fully followed the so-called rules of the men’s conference.

“They told me to keep my phone in my car whenever we went out. I was told to ensure my wife had adequate shopping to last the family up to three months, that school fees were paid, and that she had some money for miscellaneous expenses. I had no business talking to her every time,” he shared.

How did the Nairobi lawyer’s wife leave him?

Unfortunately, after some time, his wife also stopped texting and waiting up for him late at night, something he mistakenly interpreted as her being understanding and supportive.

It was only later that he realised their connection as a couple was slowly fading, and they had both become emotionally distant.

The relationship eventually broke down completely. Ten years later, he returned home from work and found his wife had moved out.

“I entered and found the door open. All the rooms were empty. She had taken everything except my clothes and left with the children. She also left a note that read, ‘I am gone and I am gone forever. I have found somebody who has time for me,’” he narrated.

Wanjohi was forced to live in his car for about a year, feeling depressed and blaming his wife for the collapse of their marriage.

For him at that time, he believed he had fulfilled his duty by providing financially, not realising he had single-handedly ruined their union.
