Ondopress.com Former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has lamented that Nigeria’s democracy has not translated into prosperity for citizens, stating that many Nigerians are now “used to going to bed hungry.” Speaking at a Democracy Day dialogue in Abuja, he said fuel, transport, and medicine have become luxuries few can afford.

He criticised political actors for betraying democracy’s ideals and alleged that corruption thrives with impunity. He pledged that an ADC government would end the cost‑of‑living crisis through urgent interventions.

Food insecurity has become a daily reality for millions, with farms lying fallow and markets empty.

70% of Nigerians reportedly do not believe elections reflect their wishes or allow them to vote out bad government.

Democratic institutions appear “weaponised” against citizens rather than protecting them.

Insecurity has turned parts of the country into a land of terror, bloodletting, and mourning.

Atiku promised to tackle wage stagnation and secure food supply on credible timelines.

Atiku’s criticism of the current administration sets the stage for opposition campaigning ahead of the 2027 elections, with the ADC pledging practical interventions to restore dignity to citizens.
