Officers of the Obalende Division of the Ogun State Police Command have foiled an alleged plot to kidnap a Chinese national.

The officers also arrested two suspects linked to a planned ₦50 million ransom operation.

The suspects, identified as Chinedu Onwuemena, 41, and Jimoh Ojo, 37, were apprehended on June 9, 2026, following intelligence reports about an imminent abduction along the Ijebu-Ode/Odogbolu Expressway corridor.

The spokesperson for the state police command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, the Divisional Police Officer of Obalende Division swiftly mobilised surveillance and operational teams after receiving credible intelligence on the planned crime.

“Acting on the intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised operatives of the Division, including the Surveillance Team, to the identified axis, where the suspects were promptly intercepted and arrested, thereby thwarting the execution of the planned crime,” the statement read.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly conspired to abduct a Chinese national and demand a ransom of ₦50 million.

The police further disclosed that one of the suspects, Onwuemena, allegedly used his position as an interpreter and driver within the victim’s company to facilitate the kidnapping plot.

“Further findings showed that Chinedu Onwuemena, who worked within the company environment as an interpreter and driver, allegedly exploited his position to facilitate the criminal plan,” the statement added.

The command said investigations have established that the suspects acted with another accomplice who is currently on the run. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and uncover the full network behind the conspiracy.

The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Commending the operatives for their swift response, the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, praised the professionalism and vigilance of officers involved in the operation.

He also highlighted the importance of timely intelligence in preventing crime and strengthening security across the state.

Ojajuni reassured residents and members of the business community of the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing useful information to security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and movements in their communities.

On Tuesday, the Federal Capital Territory Command rescued five residents of Paze in the Byazhin community in the Bwari area of the nation’s capital.

The victims were rescued during a clearance operation carried out by the police in collaboration with vigilantes and hunters.
