Seun Kuti Slams Online Activism: Social Media Is Not as Powerful as You Think

Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has criticised online activism, arguing that social media alone cannot drive meaningful change. He cited the “Bring Back Our Girls” campaign, noting that despite sustained public pressure across different administrations, the abducted schoolgirls remained missing. Kuti questioned why governments would allow unrestricted social media access if it truly had power. He noted his own posts have been restricted or audio‑removed, concluding that making videos online is “not enough.”

Key Points:

Relying solely on online activism may create false hope without real change.
Governments can suppress content, limiting digital advocacy’s reach and impact.
Past campaigns like #BringBackOurGirls did not guarantee a resolution.
Activists may need offline strategies – protests, legal action, or civil disobedience.
Kuti’s own experience shows platforms can censor critical voices.

Nigerians demanding accountability must combine online advocacy with real‑world action to pressure authorities effectively.
