EBERE UZOUKWA, PhD

The world is changing at a speed never witnessed in human history. Artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, and digital innovation are not merely shaping the future; they are redefining the present, transforming economies, industries, and the nature of work itself. Across the globe, nations investing boldly in technology and youth development are building the foundations for lasting prosperity and global competitiveness, while those that hesitate risk leaving an entire generation behind. It is against this backdrop of rapid global transformation that Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, is positioning Abia State for the future through deliberate investments in digital innovation and youth empowerment under the TechRise Programme.

The recent flag off of TechRise Cohort 3, which will equip another 850 Abia youths with advanced digital skills, reinforces the administration’s commitment to human capital development. Beyond being a training programme, TechRise represents a strategic investment in building innovators, entrepreneurs, problem solvers, and globally competitive digital professionals.

Governor Otti’s emphasis on competence rather than mere certification reflects the realities of today’s labour market where practical skills, creativity, adaptability, and problem solving ability increasingly determine success. By exposing young people to fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, machine learning, data engineering, and digital innovation, the Abia State Government is preparing youths to become creators of value rather than passive consumers of technology.

The programme also addresses one of Nigeria’s pressing socioeconomic challenges, youth unemployment, by creating pathways for employment, entrepreneurship, remote work, freelancing, and participation in the global digital economy. As beneficiaries establish businesses, provide technology solutions, or secure digital opportunities, the wider economy stands to benefit.

Particularly commendable is the administration’s commitment to mentorship, internship opportunities, and partnerships with technology hubs and corporate organisations. This holistic approach ensures that beneficiaries are not merely trained but positioned for sustainable career growth and long term success.

The Cohort 3 theme, “AI FIRST,” further reflects Governor Otti’s forward looking vision. Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies are transforming healthcare, education, commerce, manufacturing, governance, and communication globally. Preparing Abia youths for these realities today is a strategic investment whose benefits will endure for generations.

The success of TechRise also reflects strong institutional collaboration involving the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, local government mayors, and key officials whose collective efforts continue to strengthen the programme’s impact.

Special recognition goes to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, whose coordination alongside the seventeen Local Government Mayors has contributed significantly to the programme’s success. Their collaboration demonstrates the importance of institutional synergy in achieving meaningful development outcomes.

While the government creates opportunities, beneficiaries must maximise them through discipline, consistency, continuous learning, and innovation. TechRise should serve not merely as a training programme but as a launch pad for building careers, creating enterprises, and contributing meaningfully to Abia’s economic transformation.

Governor Otti’s investment in digital empowerment demonstrates a clear understanding that the future belongs to societies that prepare their young people to lead technological change rather than merely adapt to it. Through TechRise, Abia is not only equipping its youths with digital skills; it is investing boldly in a future defined by innovation, productivity, and limitless possibilities.
