Top 10 Nigerian Newspaper Headlines You Need to Know This Morning

1. ‘No Parent Should Have To Endure This Anguish’ – Tinubu Speaks Again On Oyo Kidnap

President Bola Tinubu has made a fresh declaration concerning the recent kidnapping of teachers and pupils in Oyo State by gunmen suspected to be terrorists, expressing sympathy with the victims and their families.

The President, in a statement on Monday via his 𝕏 Account, stressed that no parent should have to endure the anguish of having his/her child kidnapped.

He also added that no child should be taken away from the safety of the classroom.

KeepLoss reports that President Tinubu made the submissions amidst ongoing efforts to secure the release of teachers and pupils kidnapped by bandits in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

He reiterated that, among other steps taken, he has ordered the deployment of a specialised security unit with advanced rescue capabilities to intensify efforts to secure the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers.

According to the President, rescue efforts will be intelligence-led, careful, coordinated, and sustained until the victims return home safely.

2. Oyo State Government, Makinde Planned Kidnap To Blackmail President Tinubu – Fayose

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has alleged that the recent kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Orire Local Government Area might have been orchestrated by the Oyo State government.

He alleged the complicity of the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in the kidnapping incident, which has continued to cause ruffles across the country.

KeepLoss reports that Fayose made the allegation on Monday while speaking during an interview on Channels Television.

According to him, the kidnapping might have been planned to blackmail President Bola Tinubu.

Fayose, who had earlier praised Tinubu’s efforts in managing the affairs of Nigeria since he became President, said the timing of the Oyo kidnap raised suspicion about Makinde’s probable involvement.

The former Governor said Tinubu managed the damage done to Nigeria by the administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari effectively.

However, he claimed that, just as former President Goodluck Jonathan was blackmailed over insecurity, the Oyo kidnap incident is being positioned to blackmail President Tinubu.

3. Babachir Lawal Dumps ADC, Accuses Party Of Rigging Primaries For Atiku

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over alleged irregularities in the party’s recently concluded primaries.

KeepLoss reports that Lawal, in a statement issued on Monday, June 1, 2026, alleged that the primaries were heavily compromised in favour of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

He said the process was manipulated to produce predetermined outcomes, thereby undermining fairness and internal democracy within the party.

The former SGF said the alleged irregularities were unacceptable and informed his decision to leave the ADC.

“I am exiting the ADC because its just concluded primaries were at all levels massively rigged in favour of Kachalla Abubakar Atiku,” Lawal said.

He also accused party stakeholders of keeping quiet over the alleged flaws in the process.

4. Protesters Shun Rainfall, Storm Oyo Govt House Over Abduction Of Pupils, Teachers

Members of the Take-It-Back Movement, on Monday, stormed the Oyo State Government House, Ibadan, to protest worsening insecurity and the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The protesters defied heavy rainfall as they marched through parts of the state capital, demanding urgent action from the state government and security agencies.

KeepLoss understands that they had earlier converged on Mokola Roundabout before proceeding to the Government House, where they called for improved security across schools, roads and communities in the state.

Despite the downpour, the demonstrators said they would not abandon the protest because the lives of abducted pupils, teachers and other residents were at stake.

They chanted solidarity songs and carried placards with inscriptions calling on the government to act quickly against kidnapping and violent attacks in the state.

5. “You Are All Liars’ – Wike Blasts NDC, ADC Over Move To Takeover Nigeria

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as known liars.

KeepLoss reports that Wike accused the opposition parties of misleading Nigerians with claims of political reform and democratic renewal.

The former Rivers State governor spoke on Monday during his monthly media briefing in Abuja.

Wike criticised opposition parties over what he described as internal contradictions and lack of credibility in their recently concluded primaries.

He specifically mentioned the ADC and NDC, accusing them of claiming moral superiority while battling internal disputes.

According to him, parties that present themselves as new and untainted have failed to conduct credible internal elections without controversy.

Wike said recent disputes in opposition parties showed that the same problems they accuse the ruling party of also exist within their own structures.

6. Hayatu-Deen Takes Decision On ADC Presidential Primaries That Produced Atiku

A 2027 presidential aspirant under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, has announced that he will not challenge the outcome of the party’s May 25th, 2026, presidential primaries in court, despite expressing serious concerns over alleged irregularities and procedural lapses during the exercise.

In a post-primary statement titled “My Campaign, The Silent Majority, and the Future of Our Democracy,” released on Monday, June 1, Hayatu-Deen described his campaign as a movement inspired by what he called Nigeria’s “silent majority”, citizens who still believe in competent, principled and visionary leadership.

KeepLoss reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar secured a landslide victory in the election.

While acknowledging disappointment with the conduct of the primary, Hayatu-Deen said the need for a strong and united opposition must remain greater than individual ambition.

According to him, his concerns about the primary election have been communicated to the ADC leadership and expressed hope that appropriate action would be taken.

He thanked supporters across the country and urged Nigerians not to accept dysfunction as normal, insisting that the larger struggle to build a fairer and more prosperous Nigeria continues.

7. ‘I Don’t Believe You’re Ready To Grow If You Don’t Work With Women’ – Tobi Bakre

Nollywood actor, Tobi Bakre, has condemned gender discrimination in the entertainment industry, describing women as powerful.

KeepLoss reports that Tobi, while speaking on the Mentality podcast hosted by Media Personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, said individuals who avoid collaborating with women are unprepared for professional growth.

The thespian stated women contribute significantly to the entertainment industry, noting that they played a major role in his career development.

Tobi emphasised that he has worked with women more than men and does not factor gender into his professional decisions.

According to the movie star, his focus in the industry has always been on productivity and creativity, adding that the women he has collaborated with shared the same work-driven approach and operated without ego.

8. Toothless Lionesses Speak Up – I Go Save Calls Out First Ladies Over Silence On Abducted Oyo Pupils

Nigerian comedian I Go Save has reacted to the rising insecurity in the country, questioning the silence of First Ladies across Nigeria over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.

KeepLoss reports that in a post shared on his Instagram story, the comedian expressed anger over the continued captivity of innocent children, asking why leaders and mothers in positions of influence have not spoken out or taken stronger action.

He said their silence makes the situation worse and called for urgent intervention to secure the release of the victims.

9. Serena Williams Returns To Tennis After Four-Year Absence

Serena Williams is set to make her long-awaited return to competitive tennis after nearly four years away from the sport, having accepted a wildcard entry for the women’s doubles event at Queen’s Club later this month.

The former world number one will feature at the WTA 500 tournament, which gets underway on 8 June in London. While organisers have yet to officially confirm her partner, reports indicate she is expected to team up with Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko. Williams, 44, stepped away from tennis in 2022 after a remarkable career that yielded 23 Grand Slam singles titles.

Speculation over a comeback had been building for months. Her name appeared in the sport’s anti-doping testing pool last year before she was later listed among player reinstatements by the International Tennis Integrity Agency in February.

Earlier today, June 1, Williams appeared to confirm the news herself, posting a video on social media as she walked onto a tennis court. The clip carried the caption: “Guess everybody heard the news”, accompanied by another message that read: “Good news travels fast.”

10. FIFA Approves Major Rule Changes For 2026 World Cup

Football fans can expect a noticeably different game at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved a raft of law changes aimed at cutting time-wasting, improving officiating and keeping matches moving.

The tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be the first World Cup to feature 48 teams. FIFA referees chief Pierluigi Collina confirmed that several new regulations will be in force, including tighter controls on goalkeeper stoppages and expanded powers for the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Among the most significant changes is the introduction of a visible five-second countdown for throw-ins. Players who delay restarting play risk losing possession once the countdown expires. A similar measure will apply to goal-kicks, with teams that deliberately waste time facing the prospect of conceding a corner kick.

Substitutions will also come under stricter scrutiny. Players leaving the field must do so within 10 seconds and use the nearest exit point. Failure to comply will prevent the replacement from entering until the next stoppage after one minute of play.
