“That night I did not know what was going on, but later I got news that there was a fire at Utumishi. I turned on the television and saw indeed there was fire. Seeing that, I prayed for the safety of my child. I immediately got in contact with the school officials and the Red Cross. We were calling and asking about Zura and we were being told she was fine. We were told she was taken to the hospital. I thought that maybe she was missing, but after I heard she was taken to the hospital my soul was calm,” she said.

However, as time went by, Asha was not convinced about the state of her teenage daughter, wondering why she did not talk to her if she was still alive, at least to hear her voice.

Her fears were confirmed the following day when she was told her daughter was nowhere to be seen, not even among those taken to hospital.

Cecilia Wanjiku: Mum of Utumishi Girls’ student who died saving classmates recalls last conversation

“My brothers-in-law were sent to me to break the news, but the moment I saw them I knew my daughter was no more. Until now I am not at peace. I went to hospital in Mombasa where they took my DNA samples. I just want to see my child one more time. I want to see her body and bury her. I would not want the government to say that all the children should be buried together,” she pleaded.

Zura makes last phone call at 5pm

The grieving mum recalled her last phone call with Zura, saying she was tense and stressed, which was unusual for the teenager.

Asha regretted not asking her daughter what the tension was about, instead only encouraging her to work hard in school since school fees had been paid and everything provided for her.

“She called me the following day at 5pm. I spoke with her. She then spoke with her dad and asked for all her brothers. She talked to all of them except her older brother who was not around. That was the last time we talked. We went to sleep and then hours later the fire incident happened,” she emotionally shared.
