Residents of Akwa Ibom were left stunned after a dramatic police operation reportedly brought down a feared armed robbery gang accused of terrorizing motorcycle riders in the area.

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command revealed that its operatives successfully busted a notorious robbery syndicate allegedly operating within the Midim community in Abak Local Government Area, recovering dangerous weapons and suspicious items believed to have been used in criminal activities.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the operation unfolded in the early hours of Thursday after security operatives reportedly acted on credible intelligence concerning the gang’s movements.

Reports say the suspects had allegedly been targeting unsuspecting motorcycle operators, robbing them at gunpoint and creating fear among residents of Midim clan and surrounding communities.

In what appeared to be a movie-like midnight raid, police operatives reportedly stormed the gang’s hideout around 3:00 a.m. However, upon spotting the approaching officers, members of the syndicate allegedly tried to escape through nearby bushes.

While two suspects managed to flee the scene, police officers reportedly chased down and arrested one identified suspect, 28-year-old Uduak Vincent, said to be from Ikot Ifang Village in Midim clan, Abak LGA.

The operation also led to the recovery of several disturbing items. Police said officers recovered a locally made pistol, a small axe, a knife, suspected criminal charms allegedly used for protection, and wraps of a substance believed to be Indian hemp.

Other recovered items reportedly included mobile phones, bottles of alcoholic beverages, rings, an Airtel SIM card, and a multi-coloured handbag — discoveries that have sparked mixed reactions online, with many residents applauding the swift intervention of security operatives.

Authorities confirmed that efforts are already underway to track down and arrest the fleeing gang members.

Reacting to the breakthrough, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reportedly reaffirmed the command’s resolve to rid Akwa Ibom of violent crime. He reportedly warned criminal elements to abandon illegal activities or face serious consequences from law enforcement.

As investigations continue, residents are hopeful that the operation marks the beginning of the end for criminal gangs allegedly disturbing peace in the community.
