The Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress screening committee has screened 115 aspirants for the state Assembly primaries slated for next Wednesday.

Speaking exclusively to The GossipsNG on Friday via telephone, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, Victor Dogo, confirmed that all aspirants who purchased nomination forms were cleared for the contest.

On the tension-soaked consensus moves in the state, Dogo said consensus arrangements were strictly the business of the contestants, stressing that the party was prepared to conduct direct primaries.

“The party is not involved in the issue of consensus. If aspirants decide to step down for another aspirant, that is their private business. For us as a party, we are conducting direct primaries as stipulated by the Electoral Act.

“Where we find only one aspirant contesting, we declare him the winner, meaning they have reached a consensus among themselves. But where two or more people are contesting, we conduct direct primaries for one person to emerge,” he said.

There is political tension in Adamawa State, with some members of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s cabinet and political appointees supporting Salihu Mustapha, while supporters of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, have lined up behind Tijani Galadima.

Fintiri’s statement last Tuesday that he would unveil his preferred governorship candidate on Friday has thrown the ruling APC into fresh crisis.

The governor, who spoke when one of the governorship aspirants, Salihu Mustapha, visited him to present his nomination form, said he would soon tell the people of Adamawa State who would succeed him.

“I have the right to support any candidate of my choice, just like every other person. So, by next week, I will tell the people of Adamawa State who my candidate is,” he said.

“I will mobilise all government structures and resources to support my candidate to win in the forthcoming general elections for the good of Adamawa State residents,” he added.

“I will use the last drop of my blood to ensure that my preferred candidate emerges victorious at the primaries and the general elections,” he said.

The spokesman for Ribadu’s support group, Uba Danarewa, who spoke to The GossipsNG last month, said the National Security Adviser’s support group was backing Tijani Galadima.

He said the group would not accept any candidate outside its preferred aspirant.

“We are fully prepared for the direct primaries. We do not want consensus. The people of Adamawa should decide who rules them, not an individual,” he said.
