The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area in Ekiti State, Mrs. Grace Ogunleye, has regained her freedom after being abducted by unknown gunmen along the Ipere–Iludun Ekiti Road.
Ogunleye was reportedly kidnapped on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, with her vehicle later found abandoned and her phone switched off, raising concerns over her safety.
Confirming the development on Thursday in Ado Ekiti, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Sunday Abutu, said the council official was rescued unhurt through a coordinated effort by security agencies.
According to him, the rescue operation involved the police, military, other security agencies, and local security personnel who mounted pressure on the abductors, leading to her release.
“The breakthrough came as a result of a joint operation by the police, the military and other security agencies as well as local security personnel,” Abutu stated.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Micheal Falade, has ordered a thorough investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and apprehend those responsible.
The incident adds to growing security concerns in Ilejemeje Local Government Area. Recall that on April 28, 2026, gunmen attacked a Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo during a programme, killing a pastor and abducting about 15 worshippers, who are yet to regain their freedom.
Security agencies have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and strengthen security across the area.
