House of Representatives member for Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has dismissed claims that he was seen taking drugs or pills during a public event, saying the allegation is a smear campaign by political opponents.
“It is the work of the devil and my political enemies that claimed I was taking drugs or pills,” Doguwa said in a statement addressing a viral video that sparked online speculation. “What was in my mouth was sweet blue candy.”
The lawmaker said the footage was being deliberately misinterpreted to damage his reputation ahead of political activities in Kano State. He described the accusation as baseless and part of a pattern of attacks aimed at discrediting him.
Doguwa, who is a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Majority Leader of the House, said he had no reason to hide anything from the public. He argued that if he were taking medication, it would be a private health matter, but insisted that in this case, no drugs were involved.
“What people saw was a piece of candy. I was chewing it during the event. To turn that into a drug story shows how low some people are willing to go,” he said.
The statement drew mixed reactions on social media. Supporters said the lawmaker was being targeted unfairly and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified claims. Critics argued that public officials should be more careful about how they conduct themselves in public, given the level of scrutiny they face.
Doguwa has been a controversial figure in Kano politics for years, often at the center of heated debates in the House and in his constituency. He has previously denied allegations of misconduct, saying they are politically motivated.
He called on his supporters to ignore the viral video and focus on his legislative work. “I am in Abuja to represent my people. I will not be distracted by lies and cheap propaganda,” he said.
