The Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) study prompted the Kaduna State Government to step up public awareness and disaster preparedness initiatives.

Due to the prediction of above-average rainfall during the 2026 rainy season, Kaduna was identified in the research as one of the states most at danger of floods.

The government said in a statement released by Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, Commissioner for Information and Culture, that coordinated sensitization and disaster response programs are strengthening proactive steps to protect people and property.

Rainfall in Kaduna State is predicted to start between May 19 and June 10, 2026, and to end between October 5 and October 21, 2026.

According to the statement, the forecast also points to the potential for a severe 21-day dry period between June and August, which might exacerbate flooding and other environmental issues.

This forecast is being taken seriously by the Kaduna State Government. To lessen the effects of floods on our communities, public collaboration and early preparation are still essential, according to Malam Maiyaki.

He said that a statewide sensitization program to inform citizens on flood prevention, mitigation, and safety measures has been launched by the Ministry of Information and Culture in partnership with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA).

The Commissioner advised locals to take precautions including using sandbags and other local flood control solutions, avoid carelessly disposing of trash into rivers, and clean up drains surrounding residences and commercial buildings.

Additionally, he urged traditional institutions, religious leaders, media outlets, civil society organizations, and other interested parties to support government initiatives by encouraging environmental cleaning and providing the people with accurate information.

According to the release, KADSEMA has also reinforced emergency response coordination, started pre-positioning for rescue operations in high-risk locations, and started vulnerability assessments in flood-prone towns.

The Kaduna State Government continues to place a high premium on citizen safety. Throughout the rainy season, we will keep collaborating with all pertinent organizations and localities to guarantee prompt information distribution and efficient catastrophe risk reduction strategies,” the Commissioner continued.
