Terem Moffi has described captaining the Super Eagles for the first time as a proud moment after leading Nigeria into the final of the Unity Cup in London.

The FC Porto striker wore the captain’s armband as Nigeria defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 in Tuesday’s semi-final at The Valley, Charlton Athletic’s stadium.

Moffi impressed in attack and also provided the assist for debutant Femi Azeez’s second goal as the Super Eagles secured victory to move into Saturday’s final.

The win keeps Nigeria on course to reclaim the Unity Cup after failing to lift the trophy in the previous edition.

Moffi said: “Captaining the Super Eagles was a proud moment for myself and my family, and I am really proud of the boys.

“They showed what we can do.”

The striker also expressed confidence ahead of the final.

He said: “At top level, I play as a sole striker, so it wasn’t difficult.

“We had Philip supporting as well.. and may we win on Saturday.”

Since making his Nigeria debut against Cameroon in June 2021, Moffi has scored four goals in 20 appearances for the national team.

Away from international duty, the 27-year-old faces uncertainty over his club future after Porto decided against activating the €8m option to sign him permanently from OGC Nice.

Moffi joined the Portuguese club on loan after allegedly refusing to play for Nice following reported abuse from supporters last year.

The decision by Porto has pushed the Nigerian striker back onto the transfer market, with a return to Nice also appearing unlikely.

Reports say ES Troyes AC and FK Partizan are among clubs monitoring his situation.

Moffi, who joined Nice from FC Lorient in a deal reportedly worth €22.5m, managed two goals and one assist in 15 appearances for Porto.

Premier League side West Ham United previously showed strong interest in the striker and reportedly submitted a £25m bid in January 2023 as they searched for a possible successor to Michail Antonio.

Aston Villa also held talks with his representatives during that period, while SS Lazio are said to remain interested in strengthening their attack.

French sides Olympique de Marseille and Paris FC, as well as Turkish club Fenerbahçe SK, are also reportedly monitoring the forward.
