The much-anticipated National Schools Football Championship (NSFC) 2026 got underway in Bauchi at the historic Toro Township Stadium, with Brilliant Academy Toro edging Ni’imah High School Magama 1-0 in the opening match.

Bauchi was specially selected to host the ceremonial kick-off of the championship in recognition of its rich football heritage and as the home state of former Super Eagles player and NSFC coordinator, Patrick Pascal.

Both teams displayed determination and attacking intent from the opening whistle, but Brilliant Academy Toro capitalised on their opportunity to secure the first victory of the competition.

Speaking after the match, founder of the KickStart Sports Foundation and organiser of the championship, Ibrahim Bello, said Bauchi was chosen because of the abundance of untapped football talent in the state.

“We didn’t come to Bauchi because it was convenient,” Bello said. “We came to Bauchi because this is exactly where Nigerian football talent is hiding — on sandy pitches, in the heat, and in schools that scouts have never visited. NSFC 2026 is designed to change that.”

He explained that the National Schools Football Championship is Nigeria’s first fully structured, Nigeria Football Federation-endorsed and International School Sport Federation-aligned secondary school football tournament. The competition is being held simultaneously across the country’s geopolitical zones and will culminate in a national final at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja in June 2026.

According to Bello, all participating players are age-verified through the National Identity Management Commission database, while matches are officiated by qualified NFF and CAF referees. He added that all operational documents, including fixtures and safeguarding protocols, meet international standards.

The kickoff in Bauchi signals the commencement of the championship in schools across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
