The Osun State Police Command on Thursday confirmed the arrest of two persons for allegedly attacking the Ijebu Jesa Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force during a protest by students of Interlink College of Health Technology, Ijebu Jesa.

The protest reportedly erupted after a National Diploma II student of the institution, identified simply as Oluwaseun, was killed in a road accident on Wednesday.

Oluwaseun, a student of the Mass Communication Department, was said to have been returning to Ijebu Jesa from Ilesa on a motorcycle when he was hit by a bus, resulting in his death.

Video clips obtained by GossipsNG Metro showed angry students clashing with police officers at the scene of the accident after their demand that the bus driver be released to them was rejected by operatives.

The protesters were also said to have attempted to set the bus ablaze before police dispersed them with teargas.

The students later regrouped and stormed the Ijebu Jesa Divisional Headquarters, where another confrontation reportedly ensued.

Speaking with The GossipsNG, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abiodun Ojelabi, accused the students of violent conduct, alleging that police personnel were assaulted during the attack on the station.

“Immediately the information was received that an accident had occurred, the police mobilised to the scene. In the course of trying to secure the accident scene, people began to gather and, before we knew what was happening, they set fire to a loaf of bread soaked in petrol and threw it under the bus involved in the accident,” Ojelabi said.

“We were able to put out the fire and recover the vehicle to the station. Before then, two Divisional Police Officers and the town monarch had appealed to them to remain calm.

“However, not long after the vehicle was moved to the station, some of them went to the Ijebu Jesa Divisional Headquarters and attacked personnel there. They broke a vehicle windscreen and assaulted our officers. We arrested two of them, and investigation is ongoing. Those arrested have been transferred to the headquarters in Osogbo,” he added.

Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased student were buried on Thursday in Iwoye Ijesa, Osun State, during funeral rites attended by many of his colleagues.
