As reported by Daily Post on Friday, May 15, 2026, Prof Okey Ikechukwu, the Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, indicated that Governor Seyi Makinde’s switch is part of a broader strategy intended to fragment votes in the Southern region in anticipation of the upcoming general elections in 2027.………

He expressed these views on Thursday during a discussion on Arise Television, where he examined recent shifts in the political landscape involving prominent individuals within the opposition.

In the conversation, he touched on Makinde’s alleged transition to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the governor’s recent declaration of presidential aspirations within that party, highlighting the importance of this move in the larger electoral context.

He remarked that these new political alliances are influencing perceptions regarding the capabilities and influence of major parties as they approach the 2027 elections, particularly in terms of candidate selection and voter demographics across various regions.

He also pointed out that the current political changes involving significant leaders could impact the structure and effectiveness of established political parties, emphasizing how such transformations might shape their viability and competitiveness nationally.

He added that the ongoing political dynamics could affect party unity and electoral tactics, especially concerning how political groups align themselves as the elections near and how votes may ultimately be allocated among various candidates.

He stated, “Whether Makinde decides to go to the moon and back, or if the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his faction opt to use every resource for the election, one clear fact is that the PDP will not be a national power.

“They may not have a significant impact and could potentially fail to present a candidate for 2027. And if a candidate is put forward, it will likely be to divide the votes.”
