Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts received a major boost on Wednesday as a joint military operation involving Nigerian security forces and the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) reportedly eliminated more than 200 ISIS-linked terrorists operating in the country’s insurgency-ravaged Northeast region.

The coordinated offensive, conducted as part of expanding security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, also led to the destruction of multiple terrorist hideouts, logistics centres and command facilities allegedly used by insurgents to plan and execute attacks across the Lake Chad Basin.
AFRICOM Confirms Major Counterterrorism Success
According to information released by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the operation targeted fighters affiliated with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), one of the most active extremist groups in the region.
AFRICOM disclosed that more than 200 ISIS-linked terrorists were neutralised during the operation, including senior commander Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, who was reportedly linked to several insurgent activities in Northeast Nigeria.
In a statement posted on its official platforms, AFRICOM said the operation was executed successfully without any casualties among Nigerian or American personnel.
“AFRICOM, in continued coordination with Nigeria, conducted operations against ISIS fighters in northeast Nigeria. No U.S. or Nigerian forces were harmed. The targeted operations eliminated more than 200 terrorists, including Abu-Bilal al-Minuki,” the command stated.
Nigerian Military Hails Intelligence Cooperation
Reacting to the development, the Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, Brigadier General Samaila Uba, said the collaboration between Nigeria and the United States has significantly degraded terrorist capabilities in the region.
Speaking during a virtual engagement jointly hosted by Defence Headquarters and AFRICOM, Uba noted that intelligence sharing has enhanced the Nigerian military’s ability to identify and target insurgent camps, weapons stockpiles and supply routes.
According to him, the partnership has improved surveillance capabilities and increased the effectiveness of intelligence-driven military operations.
“The partnership has strengthened intelligence-driven operations, leading to the destruction of terrorist enclaves, logistics infrastructure and enhanced surveillance capabilities across affected areas,” he said.
Training and Capacity Building Strengthened
Military authorities also disclosed that Nigerian personnel have benefited from specialised training programmes, intelligence fusion initiatives, joint operational planning and professional military education facilitated through the partnership with the United States.
Defence officials believe these initiatives have improved operational effectiveness and strengthened the military’s ability to respond to evolving security threats.
Major Blow to ISWAP Operations
Security analysts describe the latest operation as one of the most significant blows against ISIS-linked terrorists and ISWAP fighters in recent months.
Borno State remains the epicentre of Nigeria’s insurgency, which began in 2009 with the emergence of Boko Haram before splinter factions, including ISWAP, gained prominence.
Over the years, insurgent groups have targeted military formations, schools, local communities and critical infrastructure, resulting in thousands of deaths and widespread displacement across the Northeast.
The elimination of senior commanders and the destruction of operational facilities could significantly reduce the capacity of insurgents to coordinate future attacks.
Boost for Tinubu’s Security Agenda
The operation is expected to strengthen confidence in the security strategy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which has repeatedly pledged to intensify efforts to combat terrorism and restore peace across affected regions.
The development also highlights growing military cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in intelligence gathering, surveillance technology, operational planning and capacity building.
